A Brief History

The Micronesian Community Network (MCN) was created in February 2005. Its core leadership group consists of a representative sample of Micronesians from the three Freely Associated States (Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Belau/Palau, and the Rupublic of the Marshall Islands.)

The Volunteer Resource Center of Hawaii (VRCH) initially received a "Mo' Bettah Together" grant from the Hawaii Community Foundation to assist in the organization of the Micronesian communities. Under VRCH sponsorship, a large Micronesian community meeting was held in January 2005, which identified a number of common issues and challenges facing Micronesian as the newest migrant group in Hawaii.

The leadership group was assigned to begin the process of laying the foundation of a collective effort to address these challenges. The leaders have worked alongside friends and supporters and collaborated with other partners in the community to empower Micronesian in all areas of their lives. MCN acknowledges and appreciates the help that our wonderful friends and partners in Hawaii have so freely offered us as we seek to create better opportunities for our people and improving the quality of our lives in Hawaii.

Micronesian Community Network is committed to empowering Micronesian in all areas of their lives and contributing in nurturing healthy, caring, and responsible citizens. The Network model is chosen in order to reflect our desire to work collaboratively as well as serve as the "connective tissue" binding the various cultural strands of Micronesia together, and with our friends in Hawaii, into one of partnership and collaboration.

Aloha and Mahalo to All,
